Experience:

Prior to founding General Design Office with partner Jhaelen Eli, Juliet served as project designer at Kohn Pederson Fox, Machado & Silvetti, Ruhl Walker Architects, Kennedy & Violich Architects, and Office dA. Invested in the making and management of complex and demanding projects, Ms. Hernandez joined SLCE Architects, in New York City, as a project architect. There, she oversaw the design and construction of large private developments, gaining extensive experience in the techniques of controlling time, cost and project delivery.  Projects include 516 5th Avenue, a 60 story hotel/Condominium development designed by Cesar Pelli (Pelli Clark Pelli) and 350 West Broadway, a 10 story mixed-use luxury condominium development designed by Moed de Armus & Shannon Architects.

 

Amongst other topics, Ms. Hernandez is invested in the relationship between architecture and children, and ‘play’ as a means to investigate new forms and physical conditions. Ms. Hernandez has taught at the Boston Architectural College and the Harvard University Graduate School of Design through the Career Discovery Program. She is currently a Visiting Professor at Pratt Institute.

Experience:

Prior to founding General Design Office with partner Juliet Hernandez, Jhaelen worked construction on Martha’s Vineyard before serving as project designer at Hutker Architects, Kennedy & Violich Architects, and Office dA. In 2006 Jhaelen became a consulting designer for Empyrean International, the designers and fabricators of the Dwell Homes from Dwell Magazine. In 2007, he became the Director of Business Development and was instrumental in introducing new business models to the market, most notably the Empyrean Design Partnership program. In 2008 he led the Dwell Homes studio, which was responsible for developing modern prefab homes. Shortly after, he joined the international design firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro as the director of marketing and business development.

 

Mr. Eli received the Alpha Rho Chi medal and the Eisner Prize from UC Berkeley. He serves as a design critic for reviews at numerous academic institutions including MIT, Pratt Institute, Parsons, and the Harvard Graduate School of Design and lectures extensively about alternative delivery methods. He is currently a Visiting Professor at Parsons The New School for Design.
